The program will give students a tour of “Bring Me a Lion,” an exhibition of contemporary Indian art. Students will learn about the mission of the Hunt Gallery where the exhibition is taking place, the concept of contemporary art, and interact with curators and artists.

Webster University’s Hunt Gallery’s Bring Me A Lion is the first exhibition in St. Louis to focus on contemporary Asian Indian art. Bring Me A Lion contemplates the competing forces of tradition and modernity, indigence and diasporas, village economies and international capitalism as primary discourses in contemporary Indian culture. HEC-TV Live! Comes to you from the Opening Night, with the opportunity to mingle with both featured artists and honored guests.

Students met each of the three artists selected by the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis for their upcoming “Great Rivers Biennial” exhibition. Cameron Fuller, Sarah Frost, and Martin Brief shared images of their work, video of their studio space, and answered student questions about their inspiration and process.

In this program, hear the stories of slaves and owners, lawyers and court officials that made the Gateway City of St. Louis a passage to freedom for many African Americans in the first half of the 19th century. History is brought to life by archivists and historians as they read and discuss passages from the court record.

In 1954 the United States Supreme Court issued its historic decision in Brown v. Board of Education to begin the integration of America’s public schools. But the St. Louis Archdiocese had already integrated its school system in 1947. With panelists who lived during this period, this program explores what was it like to live each day in segregated communities and to attend school in segregated buildings.

Your students will be taken into the heart of the Missouri Archives, to learn about freedom Suits, which were legal petitions for freedom filed by people of color. Dred Scott’s case may be the most famous of these petitions, but it certainly wasn’t the only one. Hear from historians, archivists, and authors.

We will illustrate how and why artwork is chosen for an exhibition and how decisions on placement within the exhibit space are made. We will hear thoughts of visitors to the exhibition on the artwork and what they like about going to art exhibits. Artist Lonnie Powell will talk about the process of creating his art and what inspired him to create the pieces. Gallery owner Robert Powell will discuss the Portfolio Gallery and it's mission.
