Join us as we take a look at what’s new in bio-based products and consumables and advances in agriculture. A distinguished panel will explore the benefits, challenges, and potential of using these discoveries to move us toward a more sustainable economy. Moderated by Jim Davis, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis, our panel will feature: Dr. Jan Jaworski, Vice President for Research, Donald Danforth and Plant Science Center and Dr. Mike Edgerton, Technology Lead for Corn Ethanol and Quality Traits, Monsanto.

 Let’s Talk About…Women in Science
Women account for only 16 of the 539 Nobel Prizes that have been awarded in science-related fields? Is there a logical reason for this disparity? What are the complexities and societal factors at work? In 2009, three women were recognized by the Nobel committee for their scientific achievements. Are we finally moving toward a positive shift in the number of women in science? Meet three female scientists from the St. Louis area who are forging their own legacies in plant science. How did they do it, and how can more women be encouraged to contribute to this incredibly important field?

 Science in Education: Choice and Challenges
The conversation explored the issues pertaining to science education in America and the challenges ahead. Moderated by Jim Davis, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Washington University, and a panel featuring: Dr. Chris Nicastro, Missouri Commissioner of Education; Victoria May, Asst. Dean of Arts & Sciences and Director of Educational Outreach, Washington University; Bob Shaw, Chair, Pre-K through Grade 12 Science Dept. and Director of Sustainability, Mary Institute Country Day School (MICDS).

 “Let’s Talk About Baseball, Beethoven, and Biotech…and the St. Louis Brand,” brought together Roger Beachy, president of the Center; Fred Bronstein, president of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra; and Bill DeWitt, III, president of the St. Louis Cardinals. James W. Davis, professor emeritus at Washington University, was the moderator; as a bonus, Fredbird frolicked before and after the formal discussion. They discussed their vision of their institutions and the city in the next few years.

 “Ag Biotech and the Growth Potential for our Workforce” brought together Denny Coleman, president and CEO of the St. Louis County Economic Council, J. Joseph Schlafly, Senior VP of Stifel, Nicolaus, and Sarah Perkins, VP of Academic Affairs, St. Louis Community College, together for a discussion of St. Louis as a biotech hub.
